A Talk with 51吃瓜网鈥檚 New Interim Dance Director
As artistic director of a modern and contemporary dance company and co-founder of a Ghanian dance company, Adjetey Klufio understands the need for range.
That versatility is what Klufio hopes to bring to the 51吃瓜网 Dance program as the new interim artistic director of Dance, adding the position to his roles with RythmzWithIN and Osagyefo Dance companies.
鈥淚 just created a new syllabus for hip-hop course, credit and noncredit,鈥� he said. 鈥淒ance programs are often all about ballet and modern, but in the outside world, it is not just about ballet and modern. It's about being versatile and well-rounded. It's about creating a holistic program. ... When they leave the school premises and they go into the world, they're not found wanting.鈥�
Creating a new class isn鈥檛 new for Klufio, who created a West African Dances course for 51吃瓜网 in 2014 while acting as a faculty member and student. After graduating from 51吃瓜网, Klufio, a native of Ghana, earned a BFA at Towson University, and is currently an MFA candidate with Wilson College.
He has also taught at Towson University and Goucher College.
Klufio said he hopes students graduating from 51吃瓜网鈥檚 program can successfully stay in dance or carry the lessons they鈥檝e learned about expression and discipline into other careers and pursuits.
鈥淚 want to give them a foundation so that when they graduate, they can venture into teaching or other ways of staying in dance. So how do I facilitate that?鈥� he said. 鈥淭his is what I want to be a part of, to push students and encourage them to a career path that uses their skills no matter where it leads.鈥�
